Most importantly, each of us are passionate about bringing the benefits of pilates to your body and to your life.
Cobham Pilates was established by Donna Pourteymour in early 2006 in a small studio above a newsagent. Having been dramatically rehabilitated from injury through this strange and wonderful method of exercise, Donna became somewhat obsessed with Pilates. After practicing the Method for several years, she trained and qualified in both mat and equipment with Body Control Pilates and took every continuing development course possible for the next several years.
During that time, she traveled the UK and the rest of the world
experiencing the best and worst pilates teachers and studios she could
find. Through these travels and experiences with various masters and
thought leaders of pilates, she developed first in her mind (and
eventually in Cobham) her concept of the ultimate pilates studio:
serene, yet with an incredible energy, clean and uncluttered, modern and
lightfilled, completely and totally organized around the needs of the
clients, totally welcoming to every age, every gender, every body type.
On a happy and warm summer day in 2010 the concept became reality as she opened the doors to our current studio, promptly bought a new espresso machine and settled in.
She then set about filling this pilates studio with the best and brightest, most innovative and caring (but tough!) teachers in the industry for she knew from personal experience that it was the teacher that differentiates good pilates from great pilates.
In order to keep these amazing teachers at the top of their game, she brought in the best teacher trainers, pilates authors, master teachers and rehabilitative specialists to continually update their knowledge on the latest research and discoveries in the field of pilates, movement, and rehabilitation.
Despite running a busy studio, Donna's greatest passion remains teaching Pilates. She still teaches some of the classes and many of the private clients that she started with all those years ago above the newsagent.

"Cobham Pilates is my addiction! Yes it is true I have been known to reply to emails at 3am but I am probably on the other side of the Atlantic. Every client who comes through the door of reception is important to me and my wish is that all clients have the most enjoyable pilates journey possible from their first visit onwards. I welcome all feedback good and bad and will do my utmost to help where I can."
We are very privileged to have Lisa Bradshaw, co-author of The Pilates Bible, Teacher Trainer, Master Teacher, and Pilates "Goddess" as a part of our team at Cobham Pilates. Lisa has two passions. Movement and Teaching. Her belief is that we are designed as functioning bodies to move, and so we should, to the best of our abilities. It is her aim to guide everybody, and every body, to discover their ultimate movement potential. On a daily basis she explores and experiments with Pilates and with the creativity of movement. Her sessions therefore always promise to be fresh, inspiring and invigorating.
From an educational point of view her ultimate intention is to demystify the Method. It is her belief that all knowledge should be available to teachers, students and clients alike. Her no nonsense approach aims to clarify the mechanics of the body and communicate the fundamentals of Pilates. Lisa worked for many years as Education Manager for Europe's biggest teacher training organisation, Body Control Pilates. She is now very excited to announce her own complete training program for new and experienced Pilates teachers. It is her intention to continually evolve the Method whilst maintaining and passing on the classical origins of Joseph Pilates' work.
“It is simple. If you want to enjoy your body, appreciate every breath and move without pain and with grace then you MUST do Pilates.”
Lisa's incredible energy and amazing knowledge are a huge asset to the clients and teachers at our studio, as well as to teachers throughout the UK who visit the studio for Lisa's continuing development workshops.
Cherry enjoyed a career in corporate marketing and took up Pilates to improve posture from years of desk work. The additional benefits of strength, flexibility and increased energy convinced her that this was the exercise method for her and led her to train as a Body Control Pilates Teacher.
Cherry joined Cobham Pilates in 2007 and has been in constant demand since. Her clients love her ability to work them hard but have compassion for their limitations.
She is renowned in the studio as a master of technique and believes that teaching clients to really understand the point of the exercises combined with developing an increased awareness of how their body works delivers the best results. Clients often claim to find muscles they never knew they had. Her energy and enthusiasm mean the path to a fitter, leaner more efficient body is also fun.
She is trained in all levels of Matwork as well as the Reformer and Studio Equipment. She is also qualified in pre and post-natal Pilates. She enjoys teaching a mix of matwork and private lesson at Cobham Pilates.
"I enjoy analysing the way people move, and the challenge of identifying how to correct movement patterns so clients can get the best out of the body they have, start to appreciate it and enjoy using it so they can get the most out of life!"
Having grown up active, but in no way sporty, Jessica developed reactive arthritis in her late teens, leaving her barely able to move for six months. Her recovery was slow, taking more than 18 months for the arthritis to resolve itself, but she was left with stiff joints and a very pronounced limp. It was at that point that she happened upon a Pilates class and was instantly hooked.
In a month her limp was gone. She started attending classes three times a week, gaining movement each week. The amazing results she experienced convinced her to give up her original job in design and retrain as a Pilates teacher so that she could spend her days helping others find the incredible benefits that she had found.
She is now fit, mobile and healthy and has taken up running despite doctors telling her it would be impossible due to joint damage. Jessica says, "I love giving others this same experience, and love watching others progress to their goals and beyond - If I can progress from heel slides to double leg stretch, anybody can!"
Jessica teaches mat and reformer classes, Barre classes and private lessons at Cobham Pilates.
Catherine came to Pilates having struggled with lower back pain since her early teens. Her challenging job in finance involved lots of travel and long hours sat at a desk. She tried Pilates, hoping that it might provide some relief, both mentally and physically. Amazed by the improvements she saw in her own body, she trained and qualified as a Body Control Pilates teacher in 2007.
Catherine brings her enthusiasm and passion for pilates to every class. Her ability to explain and bring clarity to every movement ensures a focussed and meaningful experience every time. She is renowned for her challenging yet light hearted classes and loves to push her clients, whatever their level, encouraging them to become stronger, whilst using her experience to help them do so safely.
Catherine has been a supervising teacher for Body Control, mentoring and coaching student teachers and her classes continue to be popular with pilates teachers looking to work on their own bodies.
She is qualified to teach pre and post natal Pilates and is also one of only a handful of teachers in the UK who is qualified to teach pilates to children.
Catherine teaches both mat and reformer classes from beginner through to advanced levels. She also teaches privately at the studio.
Catherine's belief that pilates is for everyone, her love of the classical approach and her boundless energy means that no two classes are ever the same.
"I am passionate about what I do and I love nothing more than to see the positive impact pilates can have, both mentally and physically, on my clients. I simply have the best job in the world."
Beth started her career as a dancer and worked professionally for many years, travelling extensively and dancing around the world. Her love of Pilates comes from her dance background, where Pilates was paramount to her day to day training.
Having studied Pilates for many years herself, Beth decided to put her passion for the method into teaching it. She completed an comprehensive apprenticeship training in Brighton with Paul McLinden, who was the first head of Body Control Pilates Teacher Training.
Since qualifying to teach mat work and studio apparatus, Beth has also taken various workshops with master teachers such as Alan Herdman and Brett Howard.
Believing that the learning process should never stop, and wanting to further her knowledge and passion for teaching, Beth has recently undertaken a comprehensive course with BASI Pilates and is enjoying learning even more about what this incredible method has to offer.
Beth started teaching at Cobham Pilates this summer as has already established herself as a very in demand teacher!
Born and brought up in Hungary, at age 10 Aniko became fascinated with Yoga and began to teach herself.
She later enjoyed many years of training in the strict discipline of Karate before moving to England and gaining qualifications as a personal trainer and fitness instructor. She has worked in the fitness industry ever since. Her own high level of fitness and healthy lifestyle has helped her through one of life's biggest challenges, when at age 34 she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
While recovering from surgery and treatment, she once again turned to forms of fitness that were mind and body oriented and, in 2001, she qualified with Stott Pilates as a matwork pilates teacher and has been teaching ever since. More recently she has trained with Body Control Pilates on the Reformer and other equipment. She is passionate about using pilates as the ultimate way of building a solid foundation for a fit and healthy body.
Aniko brings a wealth of experience in creating a strong body as well as a great compassion and understanding to her clients.
Melony has been dancing since she was two, and after leaving dance school her first "real" job was as a can-can dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. (Something we all dream of doing!) It was during her dance career that she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Told that she needed a less stressful lifestyle, she tried a Pilates class. She found that not only did Pilates change her body completely but she found that after a term the symptoms of her Crohn's disease was hugely improved.
Melony subsequently went on to train with Body Control Pilates and has been teaching for over a decade.
Melony teaches all level of Matclass, Reformer Class and BARRE Classes at Cobham Pilates.
"I am passionate about Pilates because I know it works, I see it again and again. It's the best feeling in the world to help someone move better, relieve pain and learn about their own wonderful body.... that is what drives me on!!!"
Coming from South Africa, Sam has always been very active and sporty, enjoying running, hiking, tennis and even ballroom dancing.
Like many teachers, Sam came to Pilates by route of a back injury sustained in her previous work. Pilates was instrumental in her recovery and mostly she loved the fact that it made her so much stronger in the process.
It was her remarkable recovery that inspired her to train as a Pilates teacher – she wanted to share this incredible healing and strengthening discipline with others.
In 2011, Sam trained with internationally recognized Stott Pilates, specializing in Pilates Matwork and Reformer.
Since that time, she has worked at the Sports Medicine Center in the Morningside Medi Clinic in South Africa. This environment has allowed her to work with a wide variety of clients – from those with knee injuries, hip replacements, spinal (discectomy, slipped disc, bulging disc) and shoulder injuries, as well as pregnant women and young clients.
Sam has also worked with athletes and generally fit clients who simply want the superb strength and conditioning that Pilates offers.
Sam’s philosophy is to empower each of her clients with the Pilates tools that they need in order to further their individual personal goals.
Sam has very quickly become a very popular member of the team and we are delighted to have her as a part of Cobham Pilates!
June came to Pilates from a medical background where she worked as a radiographer for several years. The nature of that career eventually gave her a repetitive strain injury while simultaneously making her scoliosis worse! She was advised to take up Pilates by her physiotherapist which was the beginning of her Pilates journey.
It was not love at first sight in the beginning. June was a competitive tennis player, very energetic, very fit and wanted to "feel the burn". But being one that doesn't give up before mastering anything she tries, she stuck with it and saw very quickly incredible changes in her body. Inspired by these changes, she trained as a teacher with Body Control Pilates.
Her passion for mastering the Pilates method is inspiring. As is her total commitment to ensuring our clients learn this method thoroughly and see for themselves the transformation it can bring in their own bodies.
June is Mat and Reformer trained and we are delighted to have her as a part of the team at Cobham Pilates!
"I feel so privileged to be able to share both my passion for & knowledge of Pilates, it is a never ending and wonderful learning experience for both teachers and clients. One learns to move his/her body more intelligently and functionally whether it is for competitive sport or daily living, hence everyone reaps the benefits and that is why I love to teach Pilates."
Vicki took up Pilates at Cobham Pilates 10 years ago to compliment her triathlon training and counter the long hours spent at a desk during her job as a corporate solicitor. As she progressed with triathlons, she found Pilates was an integral part of staying fit, strong and injury-free. It has certainly worked as Vicki is a member of the GB age group triathlon team, competing in both the European and World championships as well as taking the English National Bronze Medal for her age group in 2015.
After many years as a client at Cobham Pilates, she realised her dream and qualified as a Pilates Teacher. She then swapped to a part time legal position which allowed her to join the Cobham Pilates team in June 2015. She is passionate about Pilates being essential training for competitive sports and enjoys pushing all her clients to achieve their maximum potential and improve their fitness, whatever their goals!
Hannah trained as a dancer and found Pilates to be an integral part of her training, helping her to improve her technique and maximise her potential. As she sustained various injures along the way, she experienced the value of rehabilitative Pilates which helped her to not only return to full strength but to become even stronger!
Her belief and commitment to Pilates prompted her desire to teach others and to further her knowledge and understanding of the practice. She undertook an 18 month Pilates course qualifying as a fully Comprehensive Pilates teacher with the Pilates Foundation in December 2011. She covered in depth training in both mat and machine-based work.
Hannah enjoys working with people of all abilities and ages with particular interest in working with dancers. She has valuable experience of teaching Pilates to dance students and professionals. She understands the importance to guide and educate both dancers and athletes on their own body so that they can safely work on specific areas that might need attention outside of their training practice.
"For me, Pilates is so much more than a form of exercise. As well as the obvious physical benefits, I love to see the change in clients' emotional state during and after a class; it's so rewarding to see more calm, relaxed and happier minds leaving the studio! I am based in London but enjoy working at Cobham Pilates very much. It is a special place and so worth the drive!"
A lifelong passion for movement led Emma to qualify as a mat pilates instructor with Body Control Pilates in 2015. She studied ballet until her late teens before heading off to university and embark on the sensible career as a lawyer. It was the high stress environment and constantly being at a desk that brought her full circle and 10 years ago she started a regular and dedicated pilates practice to get moving again. She found that this helped profoundly with dealing with the pressures of work and the physical limitations of an office job. Her belief in the method was so strong that she left her job in the City to teach full time.
Emma believes in the multifaceted benefits of pilates. It helps to keep us strong and flexible but can also have a hugely positive effect in relaxing the mind and helping us to engage with our body and how we move.
Emma is also reformer qualified and continues her pilates education with both Body Control Pilates and Lisa Bradshaw.
Karen’s journey to Pilates started after her demanding career in IT consulting. After traveling and spending long hours in front of a computer, Karen recommitted herself to personal wellness and went back to school to study yoga and integrative nutrition. This resulted in her having the opportunity to teach clients in a wellness club focused on the health of women. It was there that she first tried Pilates, and she was quickly hooked. She loved the way she was challenged to strengthen the deeper postural muscles and correct life-long imbalances. In 2008, Karen achieved her BASI Pilates Certification for mat and the apparatus. She has had the opportunity to teach in the US and in Sweden. She continues to be amazed by the magnitude of the results she experiences in her own body and witnesses in her clients. With focused Pilates practice, Karen notes that you don’t just move better. You also breath better, sleep better, and live better! She loves helping her clients become stronger and more open so they feel fantastic in their bodies. Karen believes if everyone practiced Pilates, we would be a much happier and healthier world.
After an early career in a demanding role in graphic design, Kate experienced the physical impact of working in a high-stress industry first-hand. Having an inquisitive mind, this experience, mixed with Kate’s lifelong interest in health and fitness initially led her to train as a Pilates teacher with Body Control Pilates in 2003.
Since that time, Kate has worked as one of Body Control Pilates’ Senior Teacher Trainers and Examiners all over the world. During her Pilates career she has worked in busy London studios, with premiership football teams and with other Pilates teachers-in-training as well as running her own busy studio. Working along side highly experienced and skilled professionals encouraged Kate to extend her knowledge and she qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2013. Kate is also a qualified Sports Massage Therapist and a Personal Trainer, complementing further her skill set, in order to provide the most holistic service to each client’s requirements. Whilst Kate has studied widely and has a broad experience in the health and fitness sphere, Kate’s passion still lies with Pilates and using it’s incredible versatile qualities to help patient, clients and herself to move better.
Mirella first came to pilates by chance when a friend asked her to join her at a class, and was instantly hooked. Having a stressful City desk job she felt the results very quickly in her own body, and found herself constantly wanting to learn more. Having practised pilates for a number of years she spent a month doing almost daily pilates classes, which left her in no doubt that she wanted to train as a pilates teacher. Having two children in quick succession halted those plans briefly, but she continued her pilates classes during and after pregnancy and found yet even more benefits to pilates, and was more determined than ever to qualify as a teacher (not that she needed much more convincing!).
Mirella subsequently went on to qualify with Body Control Pilates and is both equipment and mat qualified. She has joined Cobham Pilates in late 2016 and has already built up a loyal clientele!
"Pilates never ceases to challenge me both mentally and physically and I am incredibly excited to be able to share this with my clients. Teaching pilates gives me the wonderful privilege of enabling people to feel connected in their bodies, move better, be stronger and live more fully".
